Public Act 194 of 1867 established that Michigan townships and cities take an annual assesment of birth and deaths in Michigan, and also instituted a statewide registration for Michigan marriages. Prior to April 5, 1867, any vital records collected were maintained by the individual counties. In 1897, Michigan began a statewide registration for divorce.*
