Organized as an independent township by the State Legislature of Michigan in 1838 consisting of all the legal township of Township 7-S, Range 9-W
First Township meeting and election was held at the house of Julius A. Thompson April 2, 1838. Alvin Gates served as moderator; James L. Bishop Hiram Draper as clerks; Oliver Raymond served as acting Justice of the Peace.
On September 25, 1839, the Township audit showed that $77.25 had been spent in the first year of operation.
